The City of San Diego saw one of it’s historic landmarks go down in closure as The Plunge swimming pool closed due to severe structural problems and lack of follow through and committment on the City of San Diego to fix the problem.

Recently tenant and lessee Tom Lochefeld was told the rent he paid on the park would multiply 400% and that the City of San Diego wanted the increase in rent without negotiations.

The closure of The Plunge is well documented by Lochefeld who said that both he and The City of San Diego knew decades ago that the building had structural issues but also that Lochefeld tried to work with the city to get the place fixed using rent credits and other financial plans which were all turned down by the city.

Yesterday Mayor Jerry Sanders said that “the rent needed to be paid” but offered no explanation as to “WHY DID THE CITY DROPPED THE BALL ON FIXING THE PLUNGE” since paying the rent and fixing The Plunge are two seperate issues and “paying the rent” the way the city sees it is sure to cause ruin in an amusement park which is a historical landmark and one of only 2 beach amusement parks in Southern California with The Santa Monica Pier being the other.

How does the city raise the rent 400% on a park over 80 years old that was a DUMP for many of the years in it’s history and ONLY RECENTLY in the last 10 years came around again as a world class desination spot with great rides, arcade games, restaurants, shopping etc..

SAVE BELMONT PARK

Okay so here we are now with 2 scenerios unfolding –

1. The Plunge closure and getting it fixed and re-opened

2. The impending 400% rent increase the City of San Diego now wants
to pay for leasing the park – a sure fire way to reduce the number of
businesses and vendors in the park as their rents also increase.
